(VNF) - The capital of Hanoi sent documents to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the General Department of Sports and Physical Training confirming its hosting status for the 31st SEA Games in 2021.

The General Department of Sports and Physical Training prepared its SEA Games project following the Prime Minister’s request to maximize cost savings.

“We then delivered it to Hanoi and some localities, in which Hanoi is the major place. The final decision is waiting for approval from the Prime Minister,” said Mr Vuong Bich Thang, head of the General Department.

The 80-page project stressed the importance of having no new facilities, in the capital or satellite regions (Hai Phong, Hai Duong, Bac Ninh…), being built, saying that the sporting activities should mainly take place in the current facilities, especially the My Dinh Sports Complex, apart from upgrading and repairing some sites.

Earlier, Hanoi hosted the Southeast Asian Games 2003 (22nd SEA Games from December 5th-13th, and the 3rd Asian Indoor Games from October 30th- November 8th, 2009.

Apart from inspecting current facilities, various financial sources are also being considered.

The 15-day multi-sport event is scheduled to begin in November 2021, with the participation of over 10,000 people, including 36 competitive events.

The 29th SEA Games will be hosted by Malaysia in 2017, while the Philippines or Brunei will host the 30th SEA Games in 2019./.
