Addressing the ceremony, Politburo member, Secretary of Party Central Committee (PCC) and Head of the PCC’s Commission for Mass Mobilisation, Truong Thi Mai, who is also President of the VCFA, welcomed the first visit by Miguel Mario Diaz Canel Bermudes as President of the Council of State and Council of Ministers of Cuba and said she believes the visit would help cement the special traditional relations between Vietnam and Cuba.

She affirmed that the special friendship between Vietnam and Cuba is an invaluable asset that has been nurtured by generations of leaders and people of the two countries.

Stressing that 2018 is the year with many important events in consolidating and strengthening the friendship between Vietnam and Cuba such as the 45th anniversary of Fidel Castro’s historic visit to the southern liberation zone of Vietnam in Quang Tri (September 1973-2018), Politburo member Truong Thi Mai highlighted Fidel Castro’s establishment of the solidarity committee at home and his visit to Quang Tri reflected Cuba’s support and introduction of Vietnam’s revolutionary victory to the world.

The image of the Cuban commander-in-chief, in his olive uniform, standing in an enemy’s blockhouse raising the flag of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam, became an extremely impressive image and a source of encouragement to Vietnamese people, said Politburo member Truong Thi Mai.

She also stressed that in the future, VCFA will continue organise perse activities to reinforce and boost the Vietnam-Cuba friendship and educate younger generations on the ties.

President of the Council of State and Council of Ministers of Cuba Miguel Mario Diaz-Canel Bermudez expressed his delight at meeting Vietnamese friends who previously had a close attachment to Cuba, VCFA members and those who actively joined Cuba’s revolutionary fight for justice.

The Cuban President also reiterated the famous saying of late Cuban leader Fidel Castro, “For Vietnam, Cuba is willing to shed blood,” while highlighting that from whole-hearted sentiments in tough time in the past, the Parties, States and people of the two countries must foster their solidarity, fighting for justice.

Lauding the close cooperation between the two countries at international and multilateral forums, the President thanked Vietnam for its support to Cuba in the struggle for ending the embargo against the country.

He then informed his hosts that during his meetings with senior Vietnamese leaders, they put forth important proposals, including a new trade agreement and a protocol on capital disbursement and financial management of cooperation in rice production development for 2019-2023.

He expressed his hope that the VCFA will maintain its active participation in friendship, exchange and cooperation activities, thereby helping to further develop the bilateral friendship and cooperation between Cuba and Vietnam.
