As the most important area for agricultural production in Vietnam, which accounts for 50% of rice, 70% of fruit, and 52% of fishery output and contributes 90% of rice and 60% of the seafood export turnover of the country, the local people in the Mekong delta region are still poorer than the national average.

As the most important area for agricultural production in Vietnam, which accounts for 50% of rice, 70% of fruit, and 52% of fishery output and contributes 90% of rice and 60% of the seafood export turnover of the country, the local people in the Mekong delta region are still poorer than the national average.

GDP per capita of the delta in 2006 is estimated at USD493, compared to the country’s average of USD729. There are three million families in the delta and up to 70% live in temporary houses. A large number of people do not have farmland. About 4 million out of 18 million people in the region are still living in poverty.

In Ca Mau province, over 34,000 households in the region are considered poor and over 17,000 households are near-poor, accounting for 12% and 6% of the total households.
