(VNF) - A special fundraising concert to support the Hy Vong (Hope) Choir, made up from students of Nguyen Dinh Chieu School for blind children and led by Mr. Ton That Triem, was held by the Friends of Vietnam Heritage (FVH) and the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Vietnam on Sunday (March 5th).

The concert will be a compilation of traditional Vietnamese songs and range of music from different countries.

Many Embassies such as Columbia, Belgium, Poland, Venezuela, Austria, Azerbaijan, Ireland, England and Switzerland are very kindly supporting this great initiative by providing refreshments and selections of their nation’s songs.

The minimum donation is VND 100,000 (USD 5) per person. All proceeds go to the Choir. The total funds raised will be announced at the end of the event.

The Hope Choir is formed of 20 remarkable visually-impaired singers and folk instrument musicians. They practice under two amazing people – renowned pianist Mr. Ton That Triem and his opera singer wife, Mrs. Nguyen Xuan Thanh.

For more than a decade Ton That Triem or Uncle Triem (as the Choir members call him) and his wife, soprano Nguyen Xuan Thanh, have taught students of Nguyen Dinh Chieu School for blind children to sing folk songs from different countries.

The children, who have a special aptitude for singing, sing in the choir, named Hy Vong (Hope). Those who are better at playing a musical instrument form an ensemble.

They all practise under Mr. Triem and have their voices trained by Mrs. Thanh. The choir has sung Vietnamese folk songs as well as songs and music from numerous countries, singing in many different languages including English, French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Malaysian and African.
