A number of charity groups in Ho Chi Minh City are carrying out programs to bring Tet (the Vietnamese term for the Lunar New Year) to disadvantaged people around the city.

Members of the Sao Khue group took a trip around the city and handed out gifts to poor people they met on the street.

The presents included sweets, clothes, and blankets bought with money the group members donated themselves, together with donations from philanthropists.

Other groups also held outdoor activities like painting fests and giving books to children.

Several other assemblages including Thien Tam and Vi An, whose members are mainly students, also handed out 300 gifts for students and 42 others for needy families in Phuoc Loc Commune in Da Huoai District, Lam Dong Province, located in the Central Highlands.

Tet falls on February 19 this year, with festive preparations beginning around one week before the date and the celebratory atmosphere lingering another week after that.
