With the expectation of introducing unique characters of the Mong ethnic group to domestic and foreign tourists, the Lao Cai provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has introduced a pilot programme to bring the Gau Tao festival to tourists.

The Gau Tao festival, a national intangible cultural heritage, will be organised with traditional games of the Mong ethnic group such as Khen dancing, pillar climbing and top spinning.

As scheduled, the largest-ever festival will take place on the tenth day of the Lunar New year (Tet holiday) in Bac Ha district.

This year, together with the Mong ethnic groups in Lao Cai, the organising board will invite other Mong groups from such as Ha Giang, Yen Bai and Lai Chau provinces to join the event.

Lao Cai plans to open the festival from 2016, with the participation of Mong ethnic groups of the northwestern provinces./.
