A 16-year-old boy with leukaemia urgently needs a bone marrow transplant to survive, but his family lacks the financial resources for his medical care until a match can be found.

Vo Van Quang is in Da Nang Hospital but his mother, Ha Thi Thoi, 44, of Dien Thang Nam Commune, Dien Ban District, doesn't know how much longer the third of her five children can last.

Mrs. Thoi said she and her husband -- they are both sick and weak -- are struggling to keep their family afloat. Their first child is a student at Danang University, but the second child had to leave school to work to support the family. They hope to keep the two youngest in school until they graduate.

Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Huong said Quang was failing to respond to treatment and only a bone marrow transplant can save him, but that is very expensive.

Ha Duc Dung, the chairman of Dien Thang Commune, said the local community had done what it can, but admitted they could afford only modest assistance. He appealed for donors to help Quang, and to ease his family's financial burdens.
