(VNF) - Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong will pay a State visit to Cambodia from July 20th-22nd at the invitation of Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni, the Party Central Committee’s Commission for External Relations has announced.

The visit comes on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties, affording both sides a chance to review their 50-year path and opening up a new period to lift bilateral ties to a higher level.

50 years ago, on June 24th, Vietnam and Cambodia established diplomatic ties for the interests of their people.

In a letter sent to Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk, President Ho Chi Minh stressed that establishing diplomatic ties was a “vivid manifestation of the close friendship and solidarity in combat, a historical event in the Vietnam – Cambodian relations, and an active factor to maintain peace in Southeast Asia’’.

The cooperative neighbourly and traditional friendship between Vietnam and Cambodia have been nurtured, strengthened and developed by the two Parties, States and peoples.

They have maintained delegation exchanges at all levels, thereby consolidating mutual trust between their leaders and people.

Vietnam currently has 190 investment projects with total registered capital of USD 2.89 billion in Cambodia, focusing on agriculture and forestry. Cambodia’s investment in Vietnam has also been on the rise, with 18 projects worth USD 58.125 million at present.

Bilateral trade exceeded USD 2.9 billion in 2016 and is estimated at USD 936 million in the first quarter of 2017, a year-on-year increase of 11.6 per cent. The Q1 figure consists of USD 582 million of Vietnamese exports, up 8.9 per cent, and USD 354 million worth of Cambodian goods, up 16.2 per cent from a year earlier.

About 960,000 Vietnamese people visited Cambodia and 212,000 Cambodians spent holidays in Vietnam last year. That made Vietnam the biggest source of foreign tourists to Cambodia, which in turn ranks 13th in the number of arrivals to Vietnam.

Cooperation between the two sides’ ministries, sectors, localities and organisations have been reinforced through delegation exchanges, mutual support in economic development, collaboration in health care and culture, and people-to-people exchange, thus helping to maintain peace, stability, friendship and cooperation along the shared borderline.

Earlier, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc visited Cambodia on April 24th-25th at the invitation of his Cambodian counterpart Samdech Techo Hun Sen.

In June, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen had a revisit to Vietnam’s Binh Phuoc province, where he embarked on a journey to save his country from the Pol Pot regime 40 years ago./.
