PM urges Dutch university to step up ties with Vietnam

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc visited Wageningen University and Research Centre (WUR) of the Netherlands on July 10.

The Prime Minister’s trip to the Dutch public university was part of his ongoing visit to the Netherlands until July 11.

He expressed his support to the university’s plans for future cooperation with Vietnam, and highly spoke of the successful partnership between the two sides in the past years in which about 200 Vietnamese engineers and doctoral degree holders graduated from the university.

He urged the university to help Vietnam train more personnel, particularly in organic farming since the country has been striving to develop mass production in agriculture amidst many challenges facing both nations, including climate change.

The PM said he is delight at the Netherlands’ effort to help Vietnam in response to climate change, and looked forward to the enhanced partnership between the WUR and universities from Vietnam in other fields, including agriculture, environment and water management.

He suggested the university should partner with those from Vietnam to establish training centres for hi-tech agriculture with focus on breeding and fruit and vegetable cultivation; and to assist Vietnam in livestock production chain development, disease control, animal feed processing, and waste treatment.

The Prime Minister also visited RIKILT-Institute of Food Safety at the WUR.

Based in Wageningen, Netherlands, the WUR consists of Wageningen University and the former agricultural research institutes of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture. The world-class university offers undergraduate and professional degrees, including doctorates, in the fields of hi-tech agriculture, life sciences and environmental science. It has about 10,000 students from over 100 countries./.
