In late January four years ago, a 2-day old baby was abandoned by her mother at Vietnam – Cuba hospital. Weighed 3.1 kg, the baby had multiple birth defects, such as heart on the right side, limbs twitching, no reflex to swallow.

Compassionate for the no-parent baby, doctors at the Department of Pediatrics devotedly took care of her. “She was named Nhi as in Vietnamese it means Pediatrics Department. Everybody expects her to become gentle and lovely so we take Thuỳ for her middle name”, said doctor Pham Thi Ngoc Han.

Nurse Tran Thi Hoai Thong said, in the first 6 months of life, Nhi regulary had phlegm which made her couldn’t breath. Doctors had to use inhalation hose to clean it, combining medical treatment.

Food must be taken through catheters because she couldn’t swallow by herself. This thing lasted until she was 2 years old. To date, Nhi can swallow, chew slowly but can eat only porridge. To help the baby eat better, doctors must grind food.
It’s very picky to prepare meals for Nhi.
“Raising a child is a hard work. Raising Nhi is much harder. Sticking with her for a long time, everybody in the department all considers her as offspring”, Thong said.

Nhi said she would like to go to the kindergarten but not want to far away from mothers, fathers.

Wishing that Nhi could go to school, having peers and childhood like any other kids, the doctors are completing dossiers to send her to the Child’s protection center of the province.
