Two localities have new-style rural areas

Phong Dien district in Can Tho city and Dien Ban town in Quang Nam province have received Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s recognition for being new-style rural areas in 2015.

Phong Dien district has so far had five out of six communes recognized as new-style rural areas by the Can Tho municipal People’s Committee, reaching 83.3%

The district concentrated on developing fruit-growing area, especially well-consumed fruits such as Ha Chau strawberry, star apple, durian, Ido longan and seedless lemon; shaping specialized cultivation areas such as Giai Xuan star apple (300 hectares), Hau Chau strawberry in Nhon Ai commune (350 hectares) and BS Truong Long longan in Nhon Nghia commune (300 hectares).

Annual average income of the district reached VND34.7 million per capita in 2015, up VND14.2 million against 2011, while that in rural areas was VND33.6 million per capita. Poverty rate dropped to 3.36% in 2015, lower than 6.02% of 2011.

Dien Ban has had 10 out of 13 communes recognized as new-style rural areas by the Quang Nam provincial People’s Committee.

By the end of 2015, annual average income of the 13 communes reached VND26.6 million per capita, up VND11.36 million against 2011. The poverty rate was reduced to 3.63%, much lower than that of Quang Nam province overall, 9% in 2015./.
