Vietnamese students champion SAGE World Cup 2019

Four members of Rainbow Straws, the team representing Vietnam in SAGE World Cup 2019, have recently become champion of the competition. Remarkably, this is the first time Vietnam has contestants taking part in SAGE World Cup.

Four members of Rainbow Straws are: Hoang Ly Tuan Long (9th grade, British-Vietnamese International School); Dam Minh Chau, Pham Gia Khanh (8th grade, Star secondary school) and Vu Huy Phong (8th grade, Vinschool).

With inspiring presentation and smart answers, Rainbow Straws from Vietnam had been selected as one of the three finalists of SAGE Word Cup 2019, together with teams from Japan and China.

The three projects presented in the final round were: edible straws made from rice (Vietnam); high tech, rotating waste and recycling disposal equipment (China) and replenishment of degraded forest (Japan).

Thanks to an outstanding presentation and adequate answers to the judging board’s questions, Rainbow Straws team had become champion of the contest, and was given the chance to meet world-renowned entrepreneur Jeff Hoffman.

SAGE World Cup 2019 (held from August 7-12) brought together teams from US, Israel, Netherlands, Ireland, Kenya, Japan, China, Chile and visitors from Korea, Uruguay, UAE, etc.

SAGE first came to Vietnam in February 2019, bringing together six teams, showcasing their capabilities via making business plans and taking part in entrepreneurship training course. There were two winning teams, of which one was Rainbow Straws, representing Vietnam in SAGE World Cup 2019 held in University of California, Berkeley, from August 7-12.

SAGE World Cup is a contest for students (age 13-18) to search for and nurture future entrepreneurs. SAGE is held annually at national and global level. Contestants, capable students with keen interest in innovation, will present their business ideas to a judging panel consisting of outstanding figures in the field of business, community work and education.

The first SAGE World Cup was held in 2003, with participating teams from Poland, Mexico, Tajikistan and US. Nowadays the competition has been held in 7 states of US and many other countries. Since the first season in 2003, more than 12,000 students have taken part in SAGE World Cup in 1,200 schools worldwide.
