VUFO actively prepares for many important activities in 2018
(VNF) - The Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO) on January 16th held the seventh Standing Committee of the Presidium meeting for the fifth tenure (2013-2018) to review its operation in 2017, and discuss key tasks for 2018.

Speaking at the opening address, VUFO Vice President Don Tuan Phong said that the fifth meeting of the VUFO presidium was very important, in order to assess the VUFO’s activities in 2017 and build the external orientation in 2018; mapped out orientations and tasks for the incoming five-year term (2018-2023). Especially, the VUFO will organise the sixth quinquennial Congress of the term 2018-2023 (scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2018); summing up the 10-year implementation of Directive No. 28-CT / TW dated on December 2nd, 2008 of the 10th Party Central Committee on enhancing the VUFO's efficiency.
Phong noted that in 2017, VUFO’s people-to-people diplomacy has achieved numerous positive outcomes in multiple fields. The relations between Vietnam and foreign partners have been persified and vigorously multilateralised through establishing a friends network of Vietnam in key areas in every continent and region, mostly focusing on neighboring countries and South East Asia region (especially Laos, Cambodia, China and ASEAN countries), countries with strategic and comprehensive partnerships; countries that have a traditional relationship, promoting economic, trade, investment, culture, science and technology, education and tourism, and some other fields necessary for the cause of construction and development of the country. This has broadened and strengthened Vietnam’s relations with international partners, contributing to the strengthening of Vietnam's position, especially in the regional and international human rights movement.
Meanwhile, multilateral activities in the past time have always been focused on strengthening and promoting. The Friendship Association and its member organisations have actively participated in regional and international mechanisms and forums, especially for forums and mechanisms in which Vietnam is a member, such as APF, AEPF, AICHR, ECOSOC, etc. Through that, the VUFO and its member organisations have mobilised international solidarity to support Vietnam, fight against hostile forces, protect and promote the national interest, support the external relations of the Party and State, contribute to the world people movement for progress, social justice and sustainable development.

In the field of foreign NGOs, the Union continues to to serve as a bridge for cooperation between foreign NGOs and their Vietnamese partners. In 2017, the disbursement value of about over USD 280 million. Especially, last year, the VUFO actively cooperated with relevant agencies, international organisations, foreign NGOs to survey and assess the situation, calling on the international community to support nearly VND 60 billion to deliver emergency aid to people affected by serious consequences of natural disasters and climate change.
2017 also was the final year of the the National Program for the Promotion of Foreign Non-Governmental Organisation Assistance in 2013-2017 period. The VUFO considers this a key task and has organised many activities to review the Program. As part of the review activities, the VUFO hosted a recognition ceremony for the contributions of 48 foreign NGOs.
In 2017, four provinces Binh Phuoc, Tay Ninh, Hoa Binh and Son La have chartered their respective friendship organisations. By the end of this year, the VUFO has established 116 member organisations including 64 central member organisations and 52 branch friendship organisations in localities. The VUFO continues to prepare the process of establishing friendship unions in six provinces including Dien Bien, Lang Son, Hung Yen, Quang Ngai, Lam Dong and Kon Tum.
For the action plan in 2018, the VUFO will focus on strengthening, expanding, deepening the network of international friends and partners; actively participating in majour multilateral forums; strengthening and improving the efficiency of foreign non-governmental affairs; improve the quality of strategic research, consultancy and external information; and reinforcing and developing a strong union.
At the meeting, representatives of the member organisations also made many suggestions and recommendations to improve the efficiency of people's external affairs. Delegates also said that, in the coming time, the VUFO should prepare the establishment of the friendship unions or organisations specialised in people-to-people diplomacy in the provinces have not yet established unions in the spirit of Directive 04-CT/TW and create best conditions for VUFO and its member organisations.

On this occasion, the VUFO also awarded Emulation Flags to eight member organisations (including four central units and four local units) as the leading units in the emulation movement in 2017.
Also in the morning of January 16th, the VUFO held the sixth Standing Committee Meeting 2013 - 2018 term to review the work in 2017 and the direction of the task in 2018.
After listening to the report of the Presidium of the Union on the work in 2017 and the main task of 2018, National Assembly Vice Chairman Uong Chu Luu said that, in the coming time, the VUFO's activities should highlight the role of the people's external relations, mobilise the participation of people from all walks of life in activities from central to local levels. At the same time, the activities promoting peace, solidarity and friendship and coordination among people need to be conducted with more depth and strategic focus.

The VUFO should have specific activities such as participating in people's forums; intensifying the application of information technology in the dissemination of foreign information and policies of the Party and the State; and improving external information work and dissemination of information on specific activities of the VUFO, he said./.
