The passengers, coming from many States in the US, are children under 18, the elderly, patients with chronic diseases and students without residence due to closure of dormitories.

The Consulate General of Viet Nam in San Francisco sent officials to the airports to support Vietnamese citizens to complete procedures and handle with urgent issues before the flights.

After landing at Ha Noi-based Noi Bai International Airport, all the passengers and crew members received health check-ups and were quarantined in line with the country's regulations.

This is the third flight to support Vietnamese people in the US to return home. The previous two trips were held on May 8 and May 16, carrying more than 340 people each.

Besides the complicated movements of Covid-19, the US also has to handle instability due to protests across the country for nearly two weeks. Many people have flooded the streets to protest police violence, the cause of George Floyd's death in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on May 25.

To date, the US remains the largest epidemic region in the world, with more than 2 million infections and more than 110,000 deaths. The total number of infected globally is nearly 7.2 million, more than 400,000 deaths.

As of early June 9, Viet Nam had 332 COVID-19 infection cases, including 192 imported cases, said the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control.

Of the patient tally, 316 patients have been freed of the virus, accounting for 95.2%, the committee added.

According to the official data of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Viet Nam has conducted more than 20 special flights to bring home about 6,001 citizens from foreign countries and territories since April 24. More repatriation flights are expected in the coming time.
