21,000 people join blood donation campaign
Up to 21,000 people participated in a blood donation campaign jointly by the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion and Samsung Vietnam.
Speaking at a meeting to review the event held in Thai Nguyen Province on September 13, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Anh Tri, head of the institute, said the institute has received around 18,000 of the 21,000 units of blood collected during the campaign.
The campaign was held in northern localities between June and August this year.
The blood donation campaign jointly launched by the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion and Samsung Vietnam.
Nguyen Van Thanh, 29, in Bac Ninh Province, one of the volunteers, said that he had donated blood 17 times. “I’m always willing to join voluntary blood donation programmes to help patients who are in critical condition.”
Prof. Tri said that this year the institute needs nearly 310,000 blood units for treatment so the campaign has partially helped to ease the shortage. Every year, the institute often faces the blood shortage as it has to provide blood for up to 150 hospitals nationwide.
He hoped that blood donation campaigns to receive more public support.
This was the eighth time the campaign was jointly organised by the institute and Samsung Vietnam. Last year, through the campaign, nearly 7,200 blood units were donated./.
