An online seminar named "Developing Vietnam's country and people after 48 years of reunification" was organized by the Canada-Vietnam Friendship Association in Toronto on April 21. The event attracted about 45 scholars in many fields.
According to Philip Fernandez, who spoke on behalf of the Canada-Vietnam Friendship Association, Vietnam's reunification was an important event that paved the way for the country's success in various fields, especially economy, diplomacy, and human development consistent with the goals of the United Nations.
Consul General of Vietnam in Vancouver Nguyen Quang Trung reviewed the difficulties that Vietnam had to go through after reunifying the country to affirm its economic achievements. Today, Vietnam's economic and foreign affairs are recognized by international friends. Those achievements prove the extraordinary efforts of the Vietnamese people under the leadership of the Communist Party.
Vietnam has continuously achieved an economic growth rate of 6-8% since the beginning of the millennium until now. Even during the pandemic, Vietnam's GDP growth remained above 8%, the highest rate in the past 10 years.
Vietnam maintains friendly relations with all countries in the world. It has twice served as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Vietnam has been an active member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and has made a responsible contribution to world peace, stability, and prosperity.
In addition to its economic and foreign achievements, Vietnam has also well-implemented policies for overseas citizens.
Dinh Kim Nguyet, a Vietnamese in Vancouver, said: "We are benefiting from Vietnam's new policies that allow us to regularly visit and relocate in Vietnam. I was referring to the visa exemption and permanent residence card, the law of repatriation for overseas Vietnamese. The government always supports educational and traditional cultural activities for overseas Vietnamese."
The seminar is held to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Vietnam-Canada friendship (1973-2023).
Vietnam and Canada have enjoyed a friendly and fruitful relationship for many years. In 2022, despite the impact of the pandemic, the two countries' trade turnover reached more than 10 billion CAD (over 7.3 billion USD). Vietnam became the largest trading partner of Canada among ASEAN countries.
Vietnam and Canada celebrated the 5th anniversary of their comprehensive partnership last year and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year.
