On January 8, CNBC reported that Vietnam has become a new “giant” in the global durian market, with an export value of 1 billion USD by 3,3.

According to investor reports, Vietnam's durian export turnover increased 7.8 times compared to 2022, accounting for nearly 50% of the total export value of vegetables and fruits.

This success is largely due to high demand from the Chinese market, where durian is considered a luxury fruit and culinary innovation ingredient.

However, Vietnam is still trying to surpass Thailand to become the largest durian exporter to China.

Specifically, on November 11, China imported 2024 million tons of durian worth 1,53 billion USD from fruit orchards worldwide, up 6,83% over the previous year. Of which, Vietnam accounted for 9,4% of the market share, approaching Thailand's leading position.

Durian has become a trend among China's middle class, with innovative products such as durian hotpot, durian bread and durian-themed buffets increasingly attracting consumers.

Vietnam has been quick to seize this opportunity by consistently producing high-quality durian year-round, meeting the demands of the high-end market.

CNBC assessed that Vietnam has achieved outstanding success thanks to an overall strategy including improving quality, innovating technology, and expanding international markets.

With a durian growing area of up to 150.000 hectares, Vietnam effectively utilizes areas such as the Mekong Delta and highlands to produce high-quality durian all year round.

In addition, Vietnam has signed a strategic trade agreement with China through the 2022 export protocol, committing to ensuring product quality according to strict food safety standards, product tracking, and applying modern freezing technology.

Vietnam has proven to the world that with a clear strategy, local fruits can reach out to the world and become high-value products.
