The 2016 competition for the Fulbright foreign language teaching assistant (FLTA) program (a nine-month, fully-funded, non-degree program for early career English teachers or professionals in related fields like American studies, American/English literature) is now open.

Competition for Fulbright foreign language teaching assistant

Participants have the opportunity to refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency and extend their knowledge of the society and culture of the US, while being teaching assistants for their native language to US students and strengthening foreign language instruction at US colleges and universities.

They may assist in up to twenty hours of language classes a week and are required to enroll in at least two courses per semester, one of which must be in American studies. Coursework is offered on either an audit or credit basis.

Participants will also be expected to facilitate cultural events, language clubs, and language tables; as well as interact with their host communities in conversation groups, extracurricular activities, and community outreach projects.

Returning to home countries upon completion of the program is compulsory to all of them.

According to a press release issued by the US Embassy Hanoi, the Fulbright program in Vietnam will coordinate to nominate up to 4 candidates from Vietnam. Two awards are expected to be made.

Fulbright FLTA program awards provide: A monthly stipend, accident and sickness coverage, travel support, tuition fees will be waived for the required coursework.

Eligibility requirements: Hold Vietnamese citizenship, have at least one undergraduate degree, teachers of English, a valid minimum TOEFL - IBT score of 79 or IELTS 6.5, and residing in Vietnam.

A complete application includes: An online application, original transcripts with certified English translations, an original degree with certified English translations, letters of recommendation (three required), a valid TOEFL or IELTS score report.

Only online applications with completed supporting docments will be considered.
