(VNF) - On the occasion of Can Tho University’s 50th anniversary, a seminar to introduce the outline of a coming joint research program with the private sector under the scope of the “Can Tho University improvement” project was on April 1st.

Enhancing capacity building for Can Tho University
It is a package combining both technical cooperation and Japanese Yen-loan support provided by the Government of Japan via Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), with a budget of roughly USD100 million for the Japanese Yen loan and USD4 million for the technical cooperation. The cooperation started in March 2016 and will end in 2020 while the Japanese Yen loan support will start later this year.

The support to CTU is one of the most important activities of JICA in the Mekong Delta region which accounts for approximately 50% of Vietnam’s rice production, 65% and 70% of aquaculture and fruit production respectively, contributing 25% of Vietnam’s GDP.

Meanwhile, CTU-which is on its way to become an international model university as stated in the framework of establishing international model University approved by the Vietnamese Government in 2006- is considered an essential research center for the region.

“The Project aims at enhancing research and education capacity of CTU in agriculture, fisheries/aquaculture and environment to meet international standards, and therefore, improve the added value of agricultural produce and protect the environment in the Mekong Delta region,” said Mr. Yasuo FUJITA, Chief Representative of JICA Vietnam Office.

It will provide financial support to joint researches by CTU, Japanese universities and Japanese companies. Joint research program is expected to help not only enhancing research capacity of CTU but also strengthening the University-Industry-Local government-Community collaboration in the Mekong Delta region and contributing to its sustainable development.

According to Professor Ha Thanh Toan, CTU Rector, the University targets to be one of the leading higher education institutions in Vietnam and recognized as one of the top universities in Asia-Pacific in training and research by 2020.

Besides, the Japanese side will support human resource development, research activities, construction of research and academic facilities, procurement of materials and equipment to undertake advanced researches and studies, and consultant services./.
