Ministry proposes marking War Martyrs day

The Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs has proposed to have a new holiday break on the War Invalids and Martyrs Day on July 27.

According to the ministry, the total number of holiday breaks in Vietnam is still low so it has room for a new holiday. The new proposal is included in the draft revised Labour Code which will be submitted to the National Assembly in late May.

The ministry suggested having a day off on July 27 to pay tribute to the war invalids and fallen soldiers. According to the ministry, the total number of holiday breaks in Vietnam is low compared to neighbouring countries. Cambodia has a total of 28 days break a year, Brunei has 15 days, Indonesia and Thailand have 16 days each while Vietnam has only 10.

Vietnam doesn't have any holidays from May 2 to September 1 nor from September 3 through until January 1.

State employees are currently given a five-day Tet Holiday and if it falls on a weekend, the next day is considered a paid day. The ministry also suggested that if the next Tet Holiday falls on a weekend, the following Monday will not be considered a paid day anymore because Vietnamese lunar new year is longer than other countries and has affected businesses.
