Over 20,000 units of blood collected during trans-national blood donation program

Figures released after nearly one month of the nation’s largest blood donation program, Red Journey, revealed an overwhelming success with some 20,000 units of blood collected from 22 provinces and cities, exceeding the initial 17,000-unit target, said Dr. Ngo Manh Quan, Deputy Head of the program’s organising committee.

During a meeting to review the program held on July 25^th, Dr. Quan added that the collected blood helped immediately to address shortages of blood in medical treatment.

In addition, the program succeeded in creating a strong pervasion in humanitarian blood donation, expanding the program in terms of blood donors as well as in the number of localities, disseminating the information about Thalasssemia disease, according to Dr. Quan.

The Red Journey has contributed to educate people, especially the younger generation, about solidarity and social responsibility.

Attending the meeting, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Xuyen also confirmed that the program had made major contributions to the health sector and brought great value to communities.

Initiated in 2013, the program collected 70,000 units of blood in 2013 and 2014. This year, Red Journey was not only organised in the mainland but also held in Ly Son island district, Quang Ngai province./.
