(VNF) - The Phu Quoc Fish Sauce Association received a decision from the People's Committee of Kien Giang province on August 18th in recognition of Phu Quoc fish sauce as a traditional craft. In addition, the fish sauce making village on Phu Quoc Island has been recognised as a traditional craft village.

Huynh Quang Hung, Vice Chairman of Phu Quoc district People's Committee, said that Phu Quoc fish sauce is the first product of Vietnam to receive the EU Certificate of Protected Designation of Origin of Phu Quoc (PDO "Phu Quoc"), demonstrating the great attention of the authorised agencies and Kien Giang province to the craft of making Phu Quoc fish sauce.

Hung noted that the People's Committee of Phu Quoc district will consider the planning of a construction site for concentrated fish sauce production facilities to ensure the sustainability of the traditional craft, as well as helping to improve and preserve the quality of Phu Quoc fish sauce.

Furthermore, the Phu Quoc fish sauce craft village will become one of the typical tourist sites of Phu Quoc Island.

Phu Quoc fish sauce is a sauce made in Phu Quoc, a large island in the southwest of Vietnam, Kien Giang province.

Phu Quoc fish sauce has over 200 years of formation and development. Currently, there are more than 50 fish sauce producers on Phu Quoc Island, producing approximately 30 million litres of fish sauce annually, with a total annual revenue of VND 600 billion (USD 26.4 million) and creating jobs for thousands of local people.

It is one of the famous sauce not only in Vietnam but also known in many countries around the world. Phu Quoc fish sauce is produced from raw materials of Phu Quoc’s anchovies.

Anchovy has best quality from the July or August to December each year. There are many kinds of anchovy, however, in order to have the good fish sauce with dark-brown color, people have to choose Spined Anchovy, Black Anchovy and Red Anchovy. Fish sauce is an essential spice for every kitchen from ordinary to advanced, from the restaurant to the household.

Tourists can visit the tank house in Phu Quoc to learn the process of making fish sauce and buy fish sauce as a gift for family and friends. Phu Quoc fish sauce has begun to apply “geographical indication” label. According to this rule, only fish sauce bottled in Phu Quoc and labeled “geographical indication” is ensured quality./.
