The annual event is jointly held by Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper, the National Steering Committee on Traffic Safety and the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusions (NIHBT).

According to Le Xuan Son, head of the organisation board of Red Sunday, the event will be held in 40 provinces and cities nationwide from mid-December 2019 to end of January 2020 and aim to collect a minimum amount of 50,000 units of blood.

Over the past 11 years, the amount of blood donated in Red Sunday events has increased significantly, from over 8,400 units in 2014 to nearly 50,000 units in 2019. The total amount of blood collected through 11 seasons were 160,000 units.

Prior to the 12th Red Sunday, National Blood Centre Deputy Director Tran Ngoc Que encouraged people to donate larger volumes of blood, from 250ml to 350ml and 450ml.

According to the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, localities across the country are facing blood shortages for treatment, especially blood types O and A. The situation would be more serious during and after the Tet holiday.
