It took several twists and turns, but UFC 249 is finally set to get underway. After 587 days, live sports are back in America.

After being postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic on the event's original date of April 18, the UFC managed to relocate the event to the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla., for May 9.

The previous main event is still intact as Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje will battle for the interim lightweight championship and an opportunity to face Khabib Nurmagomedov later this year for the right to be the undisputed UFC lightweight champion.

The event was originally scheduled for April 18 in Brooklyn, but the UFC had to find a new venue after the coronavirus shut down New York, and much of the country. UFC president Dana White tried to keep the same date but relocate the event to the Tachi Palace Resort Casino in Lemoore, Calif., but ultimately had to postpone the card.

Finally, after weeks of trying to find a way to push ahead, White was able to find a new date and site for UFC 249, for May 9 in Jacksonville, Fla without fans.

The highly anticipated card is headlined by Tony Ferguson (25-3) and Justin Gaethje (21-2) for the interim lightweight title. Khabib Nurmagomedov was Ferguson's original opponent, but he was replaced by Gaethje because of travel restrictions not allowing him to leave his native Russia amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Still, the Ferguson vs. Gaethje battle will provide plenty of excitement, and the winner will have a shot at Nurmagomedov. And the rest of the card has plenty to offer — the UFC is calling it the most stacked card in its history — including a co-main event of Henry Cejudo vs. Dominic Cruz for the bantamweight title.

History in the octagon between Ferguson and Gaethje? No, they never have fought against one another before, but that doesn’t mean it will lack fireworks. Ferguson enters on a 12-match winning streak, having not lost in almost eight years. He’s a thrilling fighter who rarely disappoints and will be facing a man known as “The Highlight.” Gaethje has reeled off three straight wins, most recently defeating Donald Cerrone last fall. Ferguson hasn't loss since May 2012, having rattled off 12 straight victories and defeating the likes of Kevin Lee, Anthony Pettis and Donald Cerrone to name a few. Gaethje counts a winning streak of his own, having won three consecutive bouts after back-to-back losses.
