The world’s leading container shipping company MSC announced the expansion of its SWAN service starting in 2025, which will establish the first direct route between the Sweden’s Port of Gothenburg and Vietnam’s southeastern province of Ba Ria - Vung Tau, VNA reported.
The announcement was made at a roundtable discussion and Vietnam-Sweden business forum in Stockholm on November 12, with Vietnam's Vice State President Vo Thi Anh Xuan and representatives from nine major Swedish companies taking part.
The service is expected to increase trade flows between the two regions, offering an efficient transportation solution that shortens transit times and reinforces bilateral economic ties.
The initiative follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) recently signed between the Port of Gothenburg and the SP-SSA International Terminal (SSIT) of Vung Tau. This agreement reflects a mutual commitment to deepening cooperation in the logistics and maritime sectors, positioning both ports as strategic trade hubs in their respective regions.

Vice President Xuan said Vietnam is transitioning toward a digital economy, green growth, and sustainable development in response to climate change. In this process driven by sci-tech and innovation, Vietnam looks forward to receiving support and cooperation from global partners, including Sweden, with whom Vietnam shares a strong and positive relationship, particularly in economy, trade, and investment.
According to her, Vietnam is undertaking institutional reform to improve business environment, create favourable conditions for both global and domesiic companies, particularly those with long-standing cooperation like Sweden, to invest in Vietnam.
Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long expressed his hope for support from Swedish companies to strengthen capacity building and share expertise in power market, particularly in integrating renewable energy sources into power systems.
The Vice President’s Ericsson visit was hosted by Jacob Wallenberg, Deputy Chair of Ericsson’s Board of Directors.
Wallenberg underscored the transformative potential of 5G technology and Vietnam's growing interest in it. He expressed his confidence in the prospects for continued partnership in this area, stressing that adopting 5G technology is crucial for Vietnam to become a more attractive investment destination.
With a legacy spanning 150 years, Ericsson is proud of its leadership and strategic vision, and the cutting-edge technology it has delivered to partners, he added.
According to Ericsson’s new release, the Vietnamese Vice President was shown some of the latest Ericsson products, witnessed demonstrations of 5G technology, and heard about the potential of 5G to catalyze nations' digitalization objectives across different industries and use cases in a sustainable and energy efficient way.
Andreas Carlson, Sweden’s Minister for Infrastructure and Housing, highlighted the 55-year government relationship between Sweden and Vietnam - which is being marked by several events in Sweden and Vietnam across 2024-25 - saying the relationship had gone beyond traditional diplomatic norms and into the area of friendship between nations, businesses, and individuals.
He said the Swedish Government was proud of the role played by all Swedish companies in Vietnam - boosted by the free trade agreement between the EU and Vietnam.
On Ericsson, he said the company had been at the forefront of technology development in Vietnam for decades, adding that sustainable connectivity will be a key area for Vietnam as it pursues digitalization to increase its influence in the global marketplace.
Johan Snellman, Business Sweden Deputy CEO, also highlighted the successful ties between the two countries, saying that more than 70 Swedish companies have a presence in Vietnam.
Praising forums such as the Ericsson-hosted round table discussion, Snellman said the signing of recent Memorandums of Opportunity across multiple areas of business were an indicator of the kind of opportunities that lie ahead, thanks to the respectful and friendly working relationship between the countries.
