Vietnam Values Friendship and Multifaceted Cooperation with Costa Rica

During the meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that Vietnam highly values its friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Costa Rica, one of Vietnam’s leading partners in the Central America and Caribbean region.

The Prime Minister proposed that the two countries continue to strengthen political trust through the exchange of delegations at all levels, especially at the high level, and through political consultations; expand economic cooperation; promote bilateral trade, cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh thanked Costa Rica for recognizing Vietnam as a market economy and expressed his belief that Vietnam-Costa Rica economic and trade cooperation would witness further development in the coming time.

The two leaders agreed to instruct relevant ministries and agencies of both sides to coordinate in identifying new directions and measures to promote bilateral trade and investment cooperation, based on each country’s potential and needs.

Recognizing the promising cooperation potential between Vietnam and Costa Rica in areas such as agriculture, tourism, consumer goods production, software industry, and digital transformation, the two leaders concurred on the need to further strengthen collaboration in these fields.

President Rodrigo Chaves expressed his pleasure at meeting Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the event and highly commended Vietnam’s socio-economic development achievements.

The Costa Rican President expressed deep admiration and affection for Vietnam and its people, noting their courage and indomitable spirit while also valuing peace, upholding a tradition of harmony, and championing national independence in the past as well as self-reliance in nation-building today.

President Rodrigo Chaves praised the significant potential for cooperation between the two countries and noted that there remains considerable room to further promote these ties. He showed particular interest in Vietnam’s tourism sector and was impressed to learn that the country welcomed approximately 20 million international visitors in 2024.

With the shared characteristic of having long coastlines, the two leaders affirmed that Vietnam and Costa Rica have great potential for cooperation in the maritime economy, including ocean protection, sustainable development, and marine environmental conservation.

The two leaders emphasized the need to enhance international cooperation in ocean protection, focusing on issues such as combating plastic waste, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and especially raising public awareness through education.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh invited Costa Rica to send a high-level delegation to attend the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention on Countering the Use of Information and Communications Technologies for Criminal Purposes, scheduled to take place in Hanoi in October 2025 under Vietnam’s chairmanship. He also conveyed an invitation to President Rodrigo Chaves to pay an official visit to Vietnam soon.

President Chaves also invited Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to visit Costa Rica at the earliest opportunity, and the latter accepted the invitation with pleasure. The two leaders agreed to assign the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs to prepare for the visits.
