Shortly after landing, the flight number VN9411 was greeted with water cannon salute.

Vietnam Airlines representative said that this is the first international flight of a Vietnamese airline to Van Don airport. The event marked a new development, opening up opportunities to connect Quang Ninh province with global tourists.

"We will continue to exploit Seoul - Quang Ninh route in the future. In addition, we are studying to open more international routes to Van Don airport", the representative shared.

Earlier, the first commercial flight operated by Vietnam Airline from Tan Son Nhat international airport landed at Van Don international airport on December 30, 2018.

Half of the year since Van Don airport was put into operation, Vietnam Airlines has transported nearly 40,000 passengers in both directions, accounting for nearly half of the total visitors.

The expansion of flights from and to Van Don airport is one of key contents under the strategic cooperation agreement between Vietnam Airline and Quang Ninh province.

Van Don is designed to be a grade 4E airport in accordance with ICAO standards and a military airfield level 2.

The airport contains one single runway, one passenger terminal with a capacity of handling 2.5 million passengers and 10,000 cargo tons per year in the first phase by 2020. This airport is capable of catering for Boeing 787, 777 and Airbus A350, A320.

Van Don airport is expected to help Quang Ninh province receive 15-16 million visitors, including 7 million international visitors by 2020, 30 million visitors with 15 million international visitors by 2030.
