Australian Expert Honoured for Contributions to Vietnam’s Natural Resources, Environment

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha on April 19 presented the Friendship Medal to Dr. Michael Parsons, a policy advisor to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE), in recognition of his contributions to sustainable development of the environmental sector as well as the friendship between Vietnam and Australia.
Ha, who is MoNRE Minister, spoke highly of Parsons’s great contributions to the natural resources and environment sector and Vietnam at large, and noted a hope that he will continue contributing his knowledge and expertise to the sector, particularly in Vietnam's priority areas like plastic pollution combat, green economy and circular economy.
For his part, Parsons promised that he will make more contributions to the sector, thus contributing to the bilateral friendship./.
From 2007 to 2009, Parsons served as a senior technical advisor to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in implementing the Mainstreaming Environment and Climate for Poverty Reduction and Sustainable Development project. From May 2011 – April 2016, he worked as a volunteer for the Australian Government at the MoNRE’s Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment (ISPNRE). He provided theoretical foundations and international experience in support of the development and completion of important documents regarding natural resources and the environment, including the National Strategy on Environment Protection for 2011 – 2015 with a vision to 2020; and Resolution 24-NQ/TW dated June 3, 2013, of the Party Central Committee on responding to climate change and strengthening natural resources management and environmental protection. He has supported ISPNRE in scientific research and the roll-out of international projects in the fields of environment and climate change, while helping the institute raise capacity for its staff through English language classes. The advisor, who was awarded the insignia “For the Natural Resources and Environment cause” in 2013, also assisted MoNRE units through policy consultations. |
