Sustainable development - strategic imperative
At COP26, Vietnam made significant commitments to combat climate change, including joining the Global Methane Pledge and the Glasgow Declaration on Forests and Land Use. Notably, the country pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
To turn these commitments into action, Vietnam has taken concrete steps. It has updated its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), outlining specific emissions reduction targets. Additionally, the government has revised national strategies for green growth, requiring widespread participation from the political system, businesses, and the public. Key initiatives include developing a carbon market and implementing a green classification system.

However, the journey towards green transition and achieving Net Zero by 2050 poses numerous challenges for countries and economies worldwide, especially for developing countries like Vietnam.
Therefore, Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) President Pham Tan Cong shared that the decision to choose the theme Net Zero 2050: Nurturing Trust - Creating Transformation is with the hope that the forum will be an opportunity for the business community to continue joining hands to affirm their belief and efforts in the process of realizing the goal of bringing net emissions to zero by 2050.

Representatives of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) shared useful information from an international perspective on the movement of the global business community on the green transformation journey. They recommend how businesses can contribute more effectively to the efforts to create a synchronized transformation towards the Net Zero goal.
Changing the approach
Binu Jacob, CEO of Nestle Vietnam said that sustainability needs to be viewed as a driving force for value creation, not a burden for businesses. According to him, the green transformation process still has many challenges.
A primary challenge is connecting the sustainability story with the core drivers in making decisions about choosing a brand or trademark. Businesses need to change their approach and connect with consumers so that sustainable initiatives become a driving force for value creation. In addition, businesses need to strengthen cooperation between parties through dialogue platforms, such as the Vietnam Corporate Sustainability Forum, to effectively promote the green transformation process towards realizing the Net Zero commitment.
In discussing the green transformation through diversity and inclusion, Milly Cheng, general director of Coca-Cola Vietnam, describes the company's sustainable development strategy, 'Our choice, our future,' which revolves around three main pillars including products, planet and people. This strategy serves as a guide for Coca-Cola Vietnam's long-term development.
With nearly a decade of community support through the EkoCenter project, Coca-Cola Vietnam has continuously innovated to build resilient communities in the digital age. Their initiatives include STEAM education programs, e-commerce training, circular economy solutions and climate change mitigation efforts, all carried out at Coca-Cola Community Support Centers across the country.
The Vietnam Corporate Sustainability Forum (VCSF) 2024 featured a wide range of content, including presentations and panel discussions on the best practices of leading Vietnamese businesses in sustainable operations. Delegates assessed that VCSF 2024 has contributed to raising awareness and driving the business community to shift towards a more sustainable business mindset, with a particular emphasis on the role of boards of directors and senior executives in building and promoting a leadership mindset that integrates the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework.
