Central provinces from Thừa Thiên-Huế to Quảng Ngãi experienced heavy rain yesterday of up to 167mm.
Prolonged rainfall of 50-100mm is forecast to hit these provinces today, while south-central provinces from Quảng Trị to Bình Định are likely to see 30-60mm.
Heavy rainfall from December 14-16 inundated the remote, mountainous district of M’Đrắk in the Central Highlands Province Đắk Lắk.
A bridge, reservoir and facilities in Krông Jing and Ea Lai communes were submerged under at least 1m of water, while landslides – including one at Dốc Cọp Pass on National Road 19C – blocked traffic.
Hoà Quang Khiêm, chairman of the district People’s Committee, said local search and rescue teams had been deployed.
Provincial authorities have asked the district to come up with plans to relocate locals from low-lying areas near rivers and streams that are at high risk of landslides.
Other localities in the province were also told to ensure people’s safety.
Schools across the central province of Thừa Thiên-Huế were busy cleaning up over the weekend to prepare for 8,000 students returning today after being forced to stay at home due to the floods./.
