Experts discussed the vast potential of the Muslim market, now comprising over 2 billion people, or 25% of the global population, predominantly in Asia and the ASEAN region. According to the FAO, Halal food spending is rising and is expected to reach 1.9 trillion USD by 2024 and 15 trillion USD by 2050.
Despite this, Vietnam has not yet made it into the top 20-30 Halal food suppliers globally, with exports remaining modest due to certification, production, and export challenges. The country has only one internationally recognized Halal certification organization, the Halal Certification Agency (HCA) Vietnam.
Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hang, HCA Vietnam's Marketing Manager, emphasized the need for credible, internationally accredited certification bodies for Vietnamese products to penetrate Muslim-majority markets. Nguyen Minh Phuong from the Ministry of Industry and Trade highlighted competition from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand and noted differing consumer cultures in Middle Eastern and African markets, along with logistical challenges.
To overcome these hurdles, domestic enterprises are urged to leverage trade promotion activities, participate in international trade fairs, and thoroughly assess risks before expanding into the Halal market.
