Earthquake hits Tokyo

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that an earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale hit Tokyo on May 25th.

According to local reports the earthquake struck at about 2.28pm local time at a depth of 50km.

The quake was centered in Ibaraki prefecture just northeast of Tokyo shaking surrounding areas briefly halting train lines. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries and no tsunami warning was issued.

Runways at Narita airport near Tokyo were briefly closed for examinations, while bullet train services were temporarily disrupted on the Tokaido, Tohoku and other Shikansen lines due to power outages, according to operator companies.

The Japanese government set up an information liaison office at the crisis-management centre at the Prime Minister's office in Tokyo.
