Embassy Supports Vietnamese people in Northwest Cambodia

On the occasion of Cambodia’s traditional Chol Chnam Thmey New Year, from March 23 to 26, Vietnamese Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia Nguyen Minh Vu led a delegation from the Embassy, in collaboration with the Vietnamese Consulate General in Battambang province, to conduct a field visit to Northwestern Cambodia. The visit aimed to support people of Vietnamese origin in the region, while fostering cooperation with local authorities across multiple areas.
During the trip, Ambassador Nguyen Minh Vu held cordial meetings with Vietnamese communities residing in the provinces of Preah Vihear and Siem Reap, alongside courtesy visits and discussions with local authorities.
In Preah Vihear province, he met Deputy Governor Min Sitha, while in Siem Reap province, Deputy Governor Ngov Sengkak warmly received the Ambassador on behalf of the provincial government.
At these meetings, Ambassador Nguyen Minh Vu reaffirmed the deep-rooted friendship and long-standing comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia.

Ambassador Nguyen Minh Vu highlighted that the armies of Vietnam and Cambodia have always stood united, working together to safeguard the independence and peace of each nation, while accompanying one another on the path of national development.
The Ambassador underscored the immense potential for economic cooperation between the two countries in areas such as investment, trade, and tourism, noting that their economies complement each other. He expressed hope for continued collaboration in various sectors, particularly between Vietnamese provinces twinned with Cambodia’s Siem Reap and Preah Vihear provinces. He emphasized the vast tourism potential between the two nations, calling for stronger connections to fully unlock and develop this sector.
During his discussions with local authorities in Cambodia’s northwestern provinces, Ambassador Nguyen Minh Vu conveyed his gratitude and expressed hope that they would continue to support the Vietnamese community in the region. He called for assistance in addressing legal issues, improving education and livelihoods, and fostering integration into local society, enabling the community to contribute actively to the provinces’ development and Cambodia as a whole.
The Ambassador also highlighted the importance of educating younger generations about the history of Vietnam-Cambodia relations. He stressed the need to instill an enduring sense of friendship and cooperation, helping to sustain the strong bond between the two countries.

In response, representatives of the provincial authorities expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the invaluable support and assistance provided by the Party, State, and people of Vietnam in overthrowing the Pol Pot genocidal regime and contributing to Cambodia's development into the nation it is today.
The authorities of Siem Reap and Preah Vihear provinces endorsed Ambassador Nguyen Minh Vu's proposal to deepen cooperation between Vietnamese and Cambodian provinces, particularly in advancing initiatives for tourism and trade connectivity.
Cambodian local leaders emphasized their commitment to facilitating legal documentation for people of Vietnamese origin, enabling them to stabilize their lives, pursue education, and improve their livelihoods.
During his friendly meetings and visits with Vietnamese communities in Preah Vihear and Siem Reap, Ambassador Nguyen Minh Vu attentively listened to their concerns and encouraged them to persevere in business and personal development, building prosperous lives in their second homeland. He commended their efforts in stabilizing their circumstances and contributing to local development, thereby reinforcing the strong bond of friendship between Vietnam and Cambodia.
Ambassador Nguyen Minh Vu emphasized that the Vietnamese Embassy will continue to closely coordinate with Cambodian authorities to support people in completing legal procedures, creating favorable conditions for people to feel secure in doing business, living long-term and contributing to the socio-economic development of the locality.
As the traditional Cambodian New Year Chol Chnam Thmey 2025, taking place in mid-April, is approaching, Ambassador Nguyen Minh Vu presented many gifts to disadvantaged Vietnamese families in the two provinces of Preah Vihear and Siem Reap with the hope of helping them have a full and happy Tet with the local people.
During the working trip, Ambassador Nguyen Minh Vu visited a primary school for disadvantaged Vietnamese children on Tonle Sap Lake in Siem Reap province. Here, Ambassador Nguyen Minh Vu encouraged the students to study hard and strive to have a better future.
According to information from the Khmer-Vietnamese Association in Siem Reap and Preah Vihear provinces, the Vietnamese community in Siem Reap is the second largest among the seven provinces in the Northwestern region of Cambodia, after Pursat province; while in Preah Vihear province, the Vietnamese community has the smallest number of people.
