Guwahati Refinery (GR) on Tuesday declared its entire three townships Zero Waste Townships. The refinery started an initiative in the year 2021 with the objective of transforming its three townships (Sector I, II, and III) into zero waste townships through the adoption of a waste management system.
A was organized at its Sector II township, which was attended by Medha Nidhi Dahal, IAS, Commissioner of Guwahati Municipal Corporation, Dr. Arup Kumar Misra, Chairman, Pollution Control Board, Assam, Barun Barpujari, ex-ED of IOCL, Sanjib Sabhapandit, ex-Director of APOL Fabrics, Ranjit Kalita, executive engineer and director of municipal administration and state nodal officer for Swachh Bharat Mission, Pradip Baishya, professor of Assam Engineering College, and the representatives of Earthful Foundation, the NGO engaged for the initiative The entire concept of waste management adopted by GR emphasized the importance of a proper waste management system in other areas of the city and its role in creating a Clean India.
Speaking on the occasion, S. P. Singh, Executive Director and Refinery Head, stressed the various challenges in the maintenance of such a system, while Dr. Arup Kumar Misra, Chairman, PCBA, elaborated on the various regulatory acts and their implications on various waste management processes. N. J. Bora, General Manager (Maintenance), also explained the various challenges related to the economic viability of the system faced during the journey. On the occasion, tokens of appreciation were presented to 10 township residents for their exclusive support and cooperation, along with the team of housekeeping personnel for their dedicated service, stated a press release.
