Vietnam and the International Labor Organization (ILO) on October 16 co-hosted an international seminar introducing the Decent Work Supply Chain Survey in the electronics industry in Vietnam.

The seminar took place on the sidelines of the 21st International Conference of Labor Statisticians (ICLS). At the event, the ILO representative appreciated Vietnam's efforts in cooperating with the ILO in the field of labor statistics.

In her opening remarks, Ambassador Le Thi Tuyet Mai, permanent representative of Vietnam to the UN, the World Trade Organization (WTO) and other international organizations in Geneva, reaffirmed the Vietnamese Government’s commitment to sustainable development and decent work goals as well as working with social partners and the ILO in implementing various policies to promote an effective work environment, ensuring the rights and benefits of both employers and employees.

Ambassador Le Thi Tuyet Mai also emphasized that Vietnam appreciated the cooperation and technical support ILO has given to Vietnam since Vietnam officially joined the ILO in 1992. This includes the implementation of the Decent Work Country Program Vietnam 2022-2026 signed between the ILO, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA), the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor (VGCL), the Vietnam Cooperative Alliance (VCA), and the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) in March this year.

ILO representatives said that the new labor statistics method, applying digital technology, was developed by the ILO from the practice of labor statistics over the past 20 years.

They also believed that the pilot project on fair work supply chain in the electronics industry in Vietnam is important, providing a practical database to help policymakers have accurate views and assessments.

This improves the effectiveness of building, and implementing labor and employment policies in the electronics industry, so that they can be applied in other industries and countries to promote the achievement of decent employment goals for people in countries around the world.

ILO representatives also appreciated Vietnam's cooperative efforts, the role of the General Statistics Office (GSO), and Vietnamese agencies in project implementation.

They believed that the results of the project will be the basis and model for the ILO to promote the application of new statistical methods in other countries, thereby promoting data- and evidence-based policy to realize the goals of global decent work and sustainable development.

At the seminar, Vu Thi Thu Thuy, director of GSO's Department of Data Collection and IT Application, introduced the project implementation, emphasizing the results, difficulties in phase one and tasks set in phase two of project.
