Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong, who set up Vietnam’s first private high school Luong The Vinh, died at the age of 80 early this morning after three years fighting against liver cancer.

Associate Professor Cuong was diagnosed with the final stage of liver cancer in July 2014. Early March this year, he was hospitalised for the treatment for more than 10 days.

Cuong is known as a respected teacher of many generations of pupils for his great devotion to the education sector as well as his impressive lectures.

He is also an educator who frankly voiced up on the weaknesses of the local education sector.

Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong was born in 1937 in the central province of Nghe An’s Quynh Coi District. He studied maths at the Russian Academy of Sciences and was awarded an associate doctorate in 1971.

In 1989, he opened Luong The Vinh High School, the first private high school in Vietnam. He was the school headmaster from 1989 to 2014.

Cuong also participated in composing many Vietnamese high school geometry textbooks and also worked for the National Education Council./.
