MAG Vietnam Director Simon Rea honored for his contribution in mine clearance activities
Mr. Simon Rea awarded Certificate of Merit by Quang Binh province
On the afternoon of April 17, Quang Binh Provincial People's Committee held a ceremony to award the Certificate of Merit to Mr. Simon Rea, who assumed the position of Country Director of MAG Vietnam from April 2016 until now.
During his time in charge, Mr. Simon Rea was very active in calling and mobilizing fund to maintain and expand the operation of MAG’s projects in Quang Binh. Notably, a US$ 1.4 million grant from the UK Department International Development (DFID) helped Quang Binh expand 5 more mine clearance teams (MAT) from October 2018 to March 2020. Aside from, Simon also called for funding from Japan and the United States.
Thanks to the active mobilization of Mr. Simon Rea, Quang Binh has had 10 MAT clearance teams (previously there was only one) to implement mine clearance activities in the whole province.
Currently, MAG Vietnam, under the leadership of Mr. Simon Rea, has implemented many activities such as: Community communication; education to prevent landmine / UXO accidents; inspecting, handling and clearing bombs and mines and explosive materials after the war.
On behalf of the provincial leaders, Vice Chairman of Quang Binh People's Committee Tran Tien Dung thanked the contributions of Mr. Simon Rea and MAG Vietnam in overcoming consequences of war in the province. These efforts contributed positively to the local socio-economic development.
By July 1, 2019, Mr. Simon Rea will resign as the Country Director of MAG Vietnam to take up the position of MAG Director for South and Southeast Asia.
Starting to operate in Quang Binh since 2003, MAG has contributed to minimizing the damage caused by landmine / UXO incidents, making important contributions to supporting socio-economic development in the locality, especially in rural areas. After 16 years of operation in Quang Binh, MAG has cleared bombs and mines on 14 million m2 of land; destroyed nearly 123,000 explosives. In 2018 alone, MAG cleared bombs and mines on an area of nearly 4.2 million square meters and destroyed more than 5,500 explosive materials in the two districts of Quang Ninh and Bo Trach. |
