NGOs pledge to support USD 250,000 to flood-hit northern mountainous provinces

(VNF) - According to the People's Aid Coordinating Committee (PACCOM) of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO), up to August 30th, 16 foreign non-governmental organisations (NGOs) committed to provide a total of USD 250,000 worth of emergency aid to people affected by the recent floods in Vietnam’s northern mountainous provinces.

Being informed about the great losses after the historic floods in the northern mountainous provinces which took place on August 3rd, the VUFO immediately took action to mobilise the aid from international organisations to help the government and local people overcome the difficult time.

Responding to the call, Save the Children Foundation, on August 15th-18th, has carried out humanitarian relief at Mu Cang Chai district (Yen Bai Province) and Muong La district (Son La Province) - two most severely damaged areas in the flood. The relief team has supported 1,250 sets of learning equipments for primary and secondary students (including backpacks, notebooks, pens, etc.) in two provinces.

In addition, the organisation will continue to support post-flood education through the provision of necessary furniture and school supplies, rehabilitation of classrooms, toilets, handwashing facilities and clean water supply, etc., ensuring safe environment for students to live and study. This activity committed a total of USD 150,000.

In addition, so far, many international organisations have conducted assessments to carry on their commitment to emergency relief work and disaster reconstruction

According to PACCOM statistics, 15 other international organisations pledged to donate USD 100,000 to the affected provinces. In particular, World Vision International supports Mu Cang Chai district USD 12,000, including essential household items for 55 households; Samaritan's Purse International Relief supports over USD 26,000 for Mu Cang Chai district, including winter clothing and blankets and Latter-day Saint Charities is expected to support nearly USD 25,000 for reconstruction in Muong La district (Son La).

The timely sharing, support and commitments on flood response of foreign NGOs are a great source of encouragement for local people and children to overcome difficulties and be ready for the upcoming school year 2017-2018./.

In the two days from August 2nd-3rd, the northern provinces had suffered heavy rains and flash floods, causing severe damage to the people. Local authorities say this is a historic floods that has never happened in the past 70 years.

According to the report of the the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, heavy rains and flash floods have taken the lives of 26 people (including at least 11 children in Yen Bai and Son La Provinces) and left 15 others missing and 27 injured.

Torrential rains and floods also swept away and collapsed 228 houses, damaged 365 public buildings, submerged 266.6 hectares of rice, and caused 398 households to leave their homes for safer places, causing approximately several billion in economic losses in the provinces.
