People-to-people Exchanges Contribute to Strengthening Vietnam - Japan Relations

Permanent Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Duong Tan Hien stated at the workshop on "Promoting people-to-people exchange and cooperation between Vietnam and Japan" that people-to-people exchanges have contributed to helping Vietnam and Japan relations develop diversely and effectively in Can Tho on the afternoon of September 15.

The event was organized by the Can Tho Union of Friendship Organizations, and the Vietnam-Japan Friendship Association of Can Tho City in collaboration with Can Tho University.

According to Permanent Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Duong Tan Hien, the friendly cooperation relationship between Vietnam and Japan has achieved new heights 50 years after diplomatic relations were established. Cultural and people-to-people exchanges are essential variables that contribute to the diversification and effectiveness of Vietnam-Japan ties.

"Japan has had many cooperation activities in Can Tho through people-to-people diplomacy, with projects to improve capacity, support vulnerable people, and support schools in Can Tho. On the other hand, universities and colleges construct Japanese language training facilities as well as other educational infrastructure,” shared Hien.

Can Tho has established cooperative and friendly connections with Japanese partners and communities in a variety of fields. Can Tho City currently has six FDI projects with investment money from Japan totaling around 1.35 billion USD. The city has also received tens of millions of dollars in Japanese ODA aid through large-scale projects such as the Can Tho Bridge and the O Mon Thermal Power Plant; in addition, Japan has supported hundreds of thousands of dollars in humanitarian assistance and community development through the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Consul General of Japan in Ho Chi Minh City Ono Masuo stated at the ceremony, "The year 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Vietnam. The bilateral cooperation is expanding in many areas, including politics, business, education, culture, and sports. Japan-Vietnam relations are currently improving, as the extensive strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia”.

According to Chairwoman of the Can Tho Union Friendship Organizations Le Thi Thanh Giang, the union and the Vietnam - Japan Friendship Association of Can Tho City have coordinated with relevant units to successfully organize many diplomatic events such as the celebration of the 45th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Vietnam - Japan in 2018, in coordination with the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Department of Foreign Affairs to annually organize the Vietnam - Japan Cultural Exchange Festival. Especially, in June 2023, Can Tho Union Friendship Organizations coordinated with the Can Tho Department of Foreign Affairs to organize a series of events on the Vietnam - Japan cultural and trade exchange program on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of establishing Vietnam - Japan diplomatic relations.

The Union and the Vietnam-Japan Friendship Association in Can Tho have also connected Japanese businesses and non-governmental organizations to implement and promote projects sponsored by the Japanese government in the city.

At the event, Vietnamese and Japanese delegates discussed topics raised in Vietnam - Japan diplomatic relations in the current period and future development in an atmosphere of friendship. The delegates also shared a lot of ideas that would contribute to further strengthening the friendship between Vietnam and Japan; especially in the fields of investment, cooperation in training and scientific research, investment, trade, culture exchanges, and tourism.

On the morning of September 15, Secretary of Can Tho City Party Committee Nguyen Van Hieu, Permanent Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Duong Tan Hien received Ono Masuo, the new Consul General of Japan in Ho Chi Minh City on his new elected term.

The Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee congratulated Ono Masuo on assuming the new position. He also informed about Can Tho City's efforts in developing transport, and economic and social infrastructure. He expressed his expectation that Ono Masuo would serve as a bridge to promote cooperation between Can Tho City and Japanese localities and businesses in many areas.

Japanese Consul General Ono Masuo thanked the leaders of Can Tho City for their attention and support for Japanese businesses.
