The 8.1 magnitude quake off the coast of Chiapas state was stronger than a 1985 temblor that flattened swathes of Mexico City and killed thousands. At least 90 deaths have been affirmed so far and the fatalities are expected to continue to increase.

Mexico has declared three days of mourning for the victims from September 8th.
