The central province of Ninh Thuan, one of the places with the most severe climate in the country, has become an ideal location for sheep.

Sheep appeared in Ninh Thuan over 100 years ago. Ninh Phuoc, Bac Ai and Thuan Bac are the districts that have the greatest number of sheep.

Each day, in the morning, shepherds round up the sheep to fields or the hillside. Sheep’s main food is wild grass.

Due to hot weather and low rainfall year round, the sheep have adapted to the local climate and are mainly raised for meat as their fleece is often less developed.

Families who raise sheep often live on the farm in harsh condition, often far from sources of safe water, markets and schools.

Each family has their own colour mark to recognise their sheep.

Since they are born, sheep can weigh 35-40 kilograms each after 8-9 months of growth. Each Ewe can give birth to 1-3 lambs per delivery.

In normal climate condition, sheep are taken home at 4-5p.m. If there is heavy rain, sheep run to the breeding grounds by themselves.
