In supporting the Vietnamese government to lessen the disasters’ effects on these communities, especially children, Save the Children has provided water filters, education kits, household kits and cash support, to help the affected children and communities to recover quickly after the 2020 devastating floods.

Since the beginning of last October, central Vietnam has been pounded by consecutive tropical storms and typhoons, which have brought widespread flooding and landslides to the region.

Months after the historic 2020 flood hit the central region in Vietnam, the heavy damage to people's lives left by this event has not been fully recovered. Many households did not have enough clean water for daily activities, restoring livelihoods for affected people faced many difficulties due to the destruction of property and houses. For children, their learning was interrupted because many school facilities and items had been damaged and lost.

The most seriously affected provinces are Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue and Quang Nam. In less than two months, Quang Binh province - where the center of the both ends of the country had to buckling in response to consecutive storms, storms and floods. The record floods claimed the lives of 25 locals, made 197 other injured, and submerged over 106,000 houses. Economic loss is estimated at more than VND 3.5 trillion (USD 151 million).

NGOs have been working tirelessly alongside the government to deliver aid to those who have been most affected by the catastrophic storms and their results.

The project "Support affected schools and communities to overcome consequences of 2020 floods" was funded by Facebook, and implemented by Save The Children and Quang Binh Red Cross Society in four communes - Van Hoa, Mai Hoa, Thach Hoa and Cao Quang from June 2021 to December 2021.

The project aims to increase income from restoring livelihoods for households with children affected by floods, ensuring safe water resources for households, strengthening the disaster prevention capacity of communities and schools.

"Thanks to the support of the project, I have restored the chicken flocks that were washed away by the floods last year. I expect to sell the chicken after three months and I will keep five hens to grow the flock and maintain 30 chickens. We have a large family and financial difficulty burden, the income from selling chickens can help me partly cover education for my children and buy food for the whole family," Huong, a beneficiary of the project in Cao Quang commune shared.

Her family is one of 214 households receiving cash support from the project to restore livelihoods. In addition, the project supports 1,000 liters of water tanks for 106 households, helping to improve the storage of clean water in living, especially during the disaster season.

Besides providing cash and households kits, the project also provided equipment (water purifiers, televisions, communication materials) to 11 schools; upgraded/built handwashing systems and toilets of nine schools; provided disaster prevention and control equipment (flashlights, slippers, hard hats, raincoats, gloves) to the Disaster Prevention and Control Command of four project communes.

Many activities to improve the capacity of natural disaster prevention and adaptation were organized to target people and commune officials and teachers with the aim of building a safer community, better resistant to natural disasters.

After six months of implementation, the project has supported more than 4,901 direct beneficiaries, including more than 3,500 children, and more than 19,5151 indirect beneficiaries.
