The Korean Hall in Vietnam Museum of Ethnology Established

Carrying the message "The beautiful encounter between Vietnam and Korea," exhibition "The Korean Hall: Traditional and Contemporary" at Vietnam Museum of Ethnology offers visual experiences of Korean culture and contributes to the cultural exchanges and mutual understanding between the people of Vietnam and Korea.

Vietnam Museum of Ethnology launched the exhibition "The Korean Hall: Traditional and Contemporary" on Dec. 17 in Hanoi. This is the result of cooperation between the National Folk Museum of Korea and the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology to celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Vietnam (August 15, 1945 - August 15, 2022).

In her remark, Oh Young Ju, South Korean Ambassador to Vietnam said: The Korea Hall was established at the 30th anniversary of Vietnam and South Korea's establishment diplomatic relations, serving as a bridge bringing the people of the two countries closer together.

Dang Xuan Thanh, Vice President of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences said: Under Vietnam's Ly dynasty, Prince Ly Long Tuong crossed the sea to Goryeo, where he was conferred the title and land by the King of Goryeo.

In the 17th century, a boat of 24 Joseon people drifted into Hoi An after days of struggling against storms. Suffering from hunger, thirst, and illness, they received warm help from Hoi An people. They were then facilitated to return to their homeland by the King of Dai Viet.

Those two stories are proof that exchanges between Korean and Vietnamese people began many centuries before the two countries officially established diplomatic relations.

Bui Ngoc Quang, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology said: The launching of "The Korean Hall" is the museum's big event to serve the Vietnamese people's demands to learn about Korean history and culture. It also opens up opportunities for stronger and deeper cultural and economic exchanges between the two countries.

In a space of more than 900 sqm, the exhibition introduces the daily life of Koreans through the reproduction of two housing models: the traditional Hanok house of the Joseon period and apartment - the most popular housing type in modern South Korea.

About the idea of the exhibition, Kim Chang-il - Curator of the National Folk Museum of Korea said: Through recreating the traditional and modern living space, the hall shows the development in the lives of Korean people, helping visitors have the most intuitive, and deep experience of Korean culture, thereby highlighting similarities in culture and lifestyle of the people of Vietnam and Korea.

The Korean Hall is officially open to welcome guests from December 18, 2022. The project is expected to last 10 years (until the end of 2032). During this period, the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology and the National Folk Museum of Korea will continue to coordinate to renew and update the display content and organize educational activities, and academic exchange. to promote cooperation between the two countries.
