The University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) for 2022 differs from other widely published rankings by not precluding the lower-end of institutions, particularly in developing nations.
With 17 Vietnamese universities making the list for the 2021/22 review period, it is the most comprehensive look at higher education institutes (HEIs) in the country.
The URAP ranking system focuses on academic quality. The group gathered data about 3,000 HEIs, covering approximately 12% of all HEIs globally. From the 3,000-plus universities and learning institutions assessed, a ranking is derived based on multiple criteria focusing on academic performance.
The overall score of each HEI is based on its performance over several indicators, including current scientific productivity, research impact, research quality, and international acceptance.
“Since URAP is an academic performance-based ranking, publications constitute the basis of the ranking methodology. Both quality and quantity of publications and international research collaboration performance are used as indicators,” the group said.
In the 2022 ranking, Ho Chi Minh City based-Ton Duc Thang University was ranked 427th, Duy Tan University 446th, Vietnam National University in HCM City 1,013rd, and Vietnam National University in Hanoi 1,104th.
Notably, Duy Tan and Ton Duc Thang universities were named in the top 500 globally.
Ton Duc Thang is a pioneer in the piloting of autonomy for tertiary education institutions in Vietnam. The university has also boosted its profile on the global academic map by being consistently listed in world rankings.
It and Duy Tan University had broken into the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy’s Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2021.
Meanwhile, the Hanoi-based Vietnam National University is one of the two leading multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral national universities in Vietnam, tasked with producing highly qualified human resources for the development of the country.
The Vietnam National University in HCM City was established in 1995 by the government to create a training center for undergraduate, postgraduate and science research, following high-quality and innovative multidisciplinary technology. It serves as the core of the higher education system and dedicates to the needs of socio-economic developments.
Last year, Vietnam had 12 universities in the URAP’s list. Five more universities entering the 2022 ranking are Thai Nguyen University, HCM City University of Technology, HCM City University of Industry, and University of Technical and Education HCM City, and Thuy Loi University.

The top 10 global ranking is virtually unchanged from the 2021 listing, with only one significant movement.
The US Harvard University came first in the list, followed by Canada’s Toronto University, England’s University College London, and the US’s Stanford University.
Other entries in the top 10 rankings were Johns Hopkins University, the University of Cambridge, the University of Michigan, the University of Washington Seattle and Tsinghua University, respectively
The Universite Paris Saclay in France has dropped out of the global top 10, making room for China’s Tsinghua University to enter into the elites. University of Washington, Seattle, moved up to the ninth position, with Tsinghua University coming in tenth.
The University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP), established in 2009 at the Informatics Institute of Middle East Technical University, measures academic achievements of universities around the world based on the number of articles published in journals, the number of citations in journals, total number of research papers published internationally in the last five years, and international cooperation.
