USAID Strengthens Digital Economy in Mekong Delta Region

On the afternoon of April 5, the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) and the US Agency for International Development ( USAID ) held a ceremony to launch the Mekong Innovation Initiative (MII) to support Vietnam in its digital economy and the 4th Industrial Revolution.
The initiative is aimed at developing human resources to be more ready for digital transformation, mobilizing and connecting resources to support innovation in the Mekong Delta region.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Tran Duy Dong said that the MII will enhance interest and motivation to participate in the digital transformation process. It also contributes to connecting resources to support innovation for the Mekong Delta.
USAID Vietnam Mission Director Ann Marie Yastishock said that Vietnam has a great opportunity to take advantage of Industry 4.0's potential to thrive through economic transformation. To achieve this, Vietnam's workforce needs to be equipped with digital skills to develop a knowledge-based economy across many fields and industries.

USAID stands ready to assist Vietnam in defining its innovative approach. This is intended to complement traditional training programs and accelerate the digital transformation of Vietnam's workforce, Yastishock said.
Mekong Innovation Initiative (MII) received technical support from the activity "Human Resources for Innovation and Startup Ecosystems" (USAID WISE). The initiative aims to mobilize resources and solutions to support innovation in the Mekong Delta. It also supports innovation-based economic development for the region; improving human resources for digital transformation, and a thriving start-up ecosystem to meet domestic and international market needs. |

MII will jointly train 500 trainees in the region on digital transformation and e-commerce skills, opening up new job opportunities and providing human resources equipped with digital skills.
The initiative also receives funding from partners, such as free cloud computing services and data centers to 1,000 innovative small, medium-sized businesses and start-ups; 500 free websites to introduce Mekong products on digital platforms.
The support also includes 5,000 scholarships for information technology training for students and employees; Free support and training on digital transformation and selling on social networks, and online channels for 3,000 farmers and small traders.

USAID Vietnam Mission Director Ann Marie Yastishock also had a meeting with businesses in Can Tho City. She witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between IM GROUP and its partners to improve capacity and increase job opportunities for digital human resources in the provinces in the Mekong Delta.
