The facility is the second of its kind in Cuba, recruiting children with disabilities in five eastern localities of Cuba. The first school in Havana has become operational since the beginning of this year.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Vice President of the Cuba Council of State and President of the Provincial Assembly of the People's Power in Santiago de Cuba Beatriz Johnson underscored that the construction of the special school for children with disabilities is also a wish of late Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
The school is located in Villa Elvira building in Boniato ward of Santiago city, one of the buildings recognised as national architectural heritage of Cuba.
So far, 120 children have registered to study in the school, 78 of them will be boarding students.
Like general education, special education for children with disabilities is free in Cuba, as are health care, meal and accommodation services
