The Vietnam Global Leaders Forum 2024 (VGLF 2024) will take place from March 30-31 in Paris, expecting 100 prominent Vietnamese and Vietnamese-origin individuals with global influence in all fields from over 20 countries and territories worldwide, VNS reported.

The participants are the winners of international prizes, entrepreneurs, large investors, experts, scientists, and artists.

The event, the second of its kind, will be held following the initiative of the Association of Vietnamese Scientists and Experts (AVSE Global), aiming to gather resources and put forth practical actions for the development of the homeland.

AVSE President Nguyen Duc Khuong said that with a multi-dimensional view, short- and long-term action plans, and detailed projects, the forum will help unlock Vietnam's potential and elevate its standing in the global economic and geopolitical map.

This year's event will focus on how to connect the diverse and strong resources of Vietnamese people around the world to propel the country’s development and make use of the previous success to help Vietnam create breakthroughs, another representative of the association said.

Prof. Tran Thanh Van: Science incubator

Professor Tran Thanh Van was born in Quang Binh province. In 1953, he went to France at the age of seventeen to study and graduated from the University of Paris with two BAs in Physics and Math in 1956.

Only two years later, he successfully defended his Master thesis and started to work in Elementary Particle Physics industry in 1966, he became a PhD in the same year. From then on, he was not only lecturer at the University of Paris but also a senior researcher at the France’s National Center for Scientific Research.

Van and his wife Le Kim Ngoc established an Association in France to help Vietnamese children in 1970. They have returned home to organize many exchanges between Vietnamese and foreign scientists since 1993.

In 1970, the couple established the Support Association for Vietnamese Children in France and called for donations from the French government and various charity organizations in many countries to set up the SOS Children’s Village in Viet Nam

In 1993, an organization namely "Rencontres du Viet Nam" (Meeting Viet Nam), led by the two professors as its co-chairmen, made debut and started operation. “Meeting Viet Nam” is the organizer of the most prestigious particle physics conferences, International Physics Science Conference in the country.

Vietnamese-French professor spouses managed to persuade French Professor Odon Vallet of Sorbonne University to offer 25,000 Odon Vallet scholarships worth VND 130 billion to best students and young researchers; built International Center of Interdisciplinary Science Education (ICISE) in Binh Dinh Province’s Quy Nhon City.; opened the Vietnam School of Physics and School of Physics and Astronomy with classes taught in English, called for donations from the French government and various charity organizations in many countries to set up the SOS Children’s Villages Da Lat, Dong Hoi and in Hue.

He was awarded the French Legion of Honor Medal by the French Government as well as the Honorable Academician title by the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Ngo Bao Chau: Vietnamese mathematical icon

Prof. Ngo Bao Chau is a Vietnamese-French mathematician who’s currently based at the University of Chicago, USA, and the first Vietnamese awarded with the Fields Medal for accomplished mathematicians in 2010.

Chau is also one of the few Vietnamese individuals to win two gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad (Australia in 1988 and the Federal Republic of Germany in 1989). At the same time, he is the Scientific Director at the Institute for Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics.

Throughout his career, Ngo Bao Chau has received numerous prestigious scientific awards, including the Clay Millennium Prizes in 2004, the Sophie Germain Prize from the Paris Academy of Sciences in 2007, the Oberwolfach Prize in 2007, and the Maurice Audin Mathematics Prize at the Henri Poincaré Institute for Mathematical Research in Paris in 2018.

In 2010, he became the youngest Vietnamese scientist to be awarded the title of Professor under the special designation by the State Council for Professor Titles in Vietnam. In 2012, he was elected an Honorary Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. In 2021, he was elected an Honorary Member of the London Mathematical Society. Ngo Bao Chau has also been honored by the French government with the North Star Medal for his contributions to science.

Prof. Vu Ha Van: Connecting mathematics and big data

Prof. Vu Ha Van is a Vietnamese mathematician currently serving as a mathematics professor at Yale University, US, and the Director of Science at VinBigData Research Institute, a part of Vingroup Corporation. He is also an honorary member of the American Mathematical Society and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS).

In terms of scientific achievements, in 2002, Prof. Vu Ha Van received the Sloan Fellowship and NSF Career Award, prestigious awards for young scientists in the US. In 2008, he was awarded the Pólya Prize (SIAM) by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics for his research on concentration of measure. In 2014, he continued to receive the Fulkerson Prize from the American Mathematical Society, along with J. Kahn and A. Johansson for solving the Shamir problem in graph theory. The same year, Van became an honorary member of the American Mathematical Society.

He presented papers at the World Mathematical Congress in 2014 and the World Statistics Congress in 2012. In 2020, Prof. Vu Ha Van was elected as an Honorary Fellow by the International Statistical Institute.

In 2018, Van made the decision to join Vingroup Corporation and was one of the pioneering individuals who laid the foundation for the establishment and development of VinBigData Research Institute, focusing on big data research in Vietnam.
