Covid-19: Daily infections fall to two-month low of 11,100

Daily infections for April 22 fell by an additional 870 cases compared to the previous day to 11,160, a record low over the past two months, according to a coronavirus update released by the Ministry of Health.

All the new infections were documented in Vietnam, with 8,015 cases diagnosed in the community, said the Ministry of Health.

Notably, none of the localities recorded 1,000 cases each nationwide. Hanoi capital that had reported thousands of cases daily over the past days confirmed just 980 cases.

Ho Chi Minh City, the largest and busiest metropolis in Vietnam, also only reported 93 cases. As the number of daily infections is gradually decreasing in the city, the local administration proposed suspending medical declarations for foreigners entering Vietnam to ease congestion at Tan Son Nhat airport.

Localities that saw the number of infections decrease most compared to the previous day were Dak Nong (-208), Hai Duong (-111), and Gia Lai (-89), cited VOV.

Meanwhile, localities that saw the number of infections rise most compared to the previous day were Son la (+273), Vinh Phuc (+44) and Dien Bien (+33).

On average 13,586 cases were recorded in Vietnam daily in the past seven days.

The same day, the Ministry of Health announced an additional 2,338 patients recovering from the disease, and only seven more deaths in five localities.

As of 6pm on April 22, Vietnam has confirmed more than 10.5 million infections, ranking 12th out of 227 countries and territories worldwide.

Of the total, nearly 9.1 million patients have recovered, and nearly 43,000 patients have died of the virus and underlying illnesses.

As many as 211 million Covid-19 vaccine doses have been administered nationwide.

Joint efforts made to speed up Covid-19 vaccination among children

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has closely coordinated with the Ministry of Health to hold working sessions with COVAX, partner countries and vaccine producers in order to speed up the supply of Covid-19 vaccines for children, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Le Thu Hang said on April 21.

Hang told a regular press conference held by the foreign ministry that the Australian Government has committed 12.8 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines for Vietnamese children, of which 4.6 million doses of Mordena have already arrived in the Southeast Asian country, cited NDO.

The foreign ministry has maintained close coordination with the health ministry in negotiations with international organizations and partners to ensure vaccines for children, contributing to the inoculation target for children in the second quarter of this year in accordance with Government instructions, and meeting the hopes of parents that their children can be safe at school, Hang said.

Vietnam calls for strengthened efforts to address conflict-induced hunger

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN called on the international community to strengthen efforts to address conflict-induced hunger during a UN Security Council meeting on April 21.

The Arria-formula meeting on conflict and hunger was attended by Máximo Torero Cullen, Chief Economist of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO); Margot Van Der Velden, Director of Emergencies at the World Food Program (WFP); and Michael Fakhri, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food.

In his remarks, Giang said the world’s food system has been increasingly challenged by conflicts, the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change and natural disasters. These have seriously threatened the global food security, especially with regard to countries and conflicts in Africa, Asia or Europe, he said.

He welcomed recent efforts by the UN, FAO, WFP and humanitarian partners to provide aid to people in many areas; and encouraged the UN and partners to forge solutions to surging prices of many necessary commodities. He also suggested increasing the exchange of information and updates about areas where food insecurity emerges or evolves complexly.

The Vietnamese diplomat emphasized that all parties to a conflict must adhere to international humanitarian law and do not use starvation as a method of warfare as stated in Resolutions 2417 and 2573, VNA reported.

He also urged deepening cooperation between the UN and regional organizations in tackling the root causes of conflicts, building peace and preventing conflicts, thus reducing the risk of a conflict-induced hunger.

ASEAN has formed specific partnership in sustaining food security over recent years, he noted, adding the Vietnam views food security as the root of security, stability and development and will continue contributing to the world’s concerted efforts in addressing food security challenges.
