Ministry of Public Security to strengthen ties with UN

Minister of Public Security Sen. Lt. Gen. Luong Tam Quang received United Nations Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Pauline Tamesis in Hanoi on July 18.

Quang highly appreciated Tamesis’s active assistance to the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) during the preparation and deployment of personnel to UN peacekeeping operations, as well as her support for the MPS’s cooperation programs with UN agencies like the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), the UN Development Program (UNDP), and the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT).

He affirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy of supporting the UN’s centrality in the global governance system, the promotion of multilateralism and the world order based on international law and the UN Charter, along with international cooperation in settling global issues, thus helping maintain international peace and security.

The minister also highlighted the MPS’s moves to take part in UN peacekeeping operations and promote gender equality, including the partnership with UN Women, according to VNA.

To further enhance the MPS’s ties with UN agencies, Quang proposed the UN official continue facilitating the bilateral cooperation, with a focus on providing equipment for and assist the MPS to improve the capacity of combating trans-national crimes, including those related to drugs, human trafficking, high technology, money laundering, and terrorism.

He suggested Tamesis promote the possibility of high-level delegation exchanges and meetings to convey messages from Vietnamese Party and Government leaders, and UN leaders, while supporting Vietnam’s re-candidacy for membership of the UN Human Rights Council for the 2026 - 2028 term.

Quang also called for more assistance in terms of pre-deployment training, the examination and evaluation of officers for peacekeeping operations, the training of lecturers, and the provision of training equipment and textbooks.

At the meeting, Tamesis noted that the UN welcomes and highly values efforts by the MPS in particular and the Vietnamese Government in general in participating in peacekeeping operations and resolving global issues, which have helped sustain peace, stability, and security in the world.

The official pledged that as the UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam, she will continue helping the MPS to carry out the training of police officers joining the UN peacekeeping force.

She also vowed to promote cooperation programs between the MPS and UN agencies, thus practically contributing to regional and global peace, stability, and security.

Heavy rainfall and possible tropical depression set to impact Northern Vietnam

Northern Vietnam is expected to see significant rainfall until July 20, with a brief respite before the rain resumes and extends further. A low-pressure area is predicted to form in the East Sea, potentially intensifying into a tropical depression.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected in Northern Vietnam, the Central Highlands, and Southern Vietnam on July 18. Some areas might experience heavy rain, with precipitation levels from 7 AM to 3 PM exceeding 50mm in certain locations such as Tram Tau (Yen Bai) with 68mm, Van Don (Quang Ninh) with 90.6mm, Mai Chau (Hoa Binh) with 63mm, and Bao Loc (Lam Dong) with 50.6mm.

The forecast indicates on July 19 morning, Northern Vietnam and the North Central region will continue to experience scattered showers and thunderstorms, with some areas receiving very heavy rainfall of 20-40mm and isolated places exceeding 90mm.

In the Central Highlands and Southern regions, there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms, with some areas receiving very heavy rainfall of 20-40mm and isolated places exceeding 70mm.

There is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong winds during thunderstorms. The heavy localized rain could cause flash floods in small rivers and streams, landslides on steep slopes, and flooding in low-lying areas. There is a need to be cautious of large-scale rain in a short period, which could lead to urban flooding.

The meteorological agency predicts that from the night of July 19-20 and from the night of July 23-27, Northern Vietnam will continue to have scattered showers and thunderstorms, with some areas receiving heavy rainfall, mainly in the evenings and nights.

In the Central region, localized hot weather is expected around July 21-22. The North Central region will have weather patterns similar to Northern Vietnam, with scattered showers and thunderstorms from the night of July 19-20, with some areas receiving heavy rain, mainly in the evenings and nights, VNN reported.
