On the morning of June 12, in Hanoi, the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense held a ceremony to award the State President's decision to officers to take over United Nations (UN) peacekeeping missions at the UN Headquarters, chaired by the Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Minister of National Defense, Head of the Inter-Sectoral Working Group, and Head of the Ministry of National Defence’s Steering Committee for the Participation in UN Peacekeeping Operations.

At the ceremony, Senior Lieutenant Colonel Truong Anh Tuan, Deputy Commander of the Training Centre under the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department, Ministry of National Defence was awarded the Decision to take over peacekeeping duty as a Military Affair Officer at the Office of Military Affairs, the DPO in New York.
According to Colonel Nguyen Nhu Canh, Vice Director of the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department, Senior Lieutenant Colonel Truong Anh Tuan is the fourth officer of the Vietnam People's Army and the fifth from Vietnam to be recruited to work at the UN Headquarters.
Senior Lieutenant Colonel Truong Anh Tuan was selected as a Military Affair Officer, together with an officer from Pakistan, after overcoming representatives from 193 other countries.
Colonel Nguyen Nhu Canh stated that this once again demonstrates the high working capacity of Vietnam People's Army officers in the international environment in general, and the environment with many demanding requirements at the UN in particular.
Addressing the event, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien appreciated the performance of the soldiers who recently participated in UN peacekeeping operations, and expressed appreciation for Senior Lieutenant Colonel Truong Anh Tuan on receiving the decision.
Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien ordered Senior Lieutenant Colonel Truong Anh Tuan to promote his sense of responsibility and international solidarity spirit, overcoming all difficulties and completing all assignments.

Senior Lieutenant Colonel Truong Anh Tuan affirmed his determination to accomplish all tasks assigned by the UN, the Central Military Commission, and the Ministry of National Defence with the highest determination, while actively engaging in charity activities and spreading the image of a friendly, humane, and peace-loving Vietnam and the noble qualities of the “Uncle Ho’s soldiers” to international friends and colleagues.
The esteemed officer had to go through three rounds of application before being accepted as the Military Affairs Officer at the Office of Military Affairs (OMA), Department of Peace Operations, UN Headquarters, including profile, written exam, and face-to-face interview. Member countries submit between 150 and 200 applications for a single slot.
Before joining the UN Headquarters, Senior Lieutenant Colonel Truong Anh Tuan worked as a Liaison Officer at the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan (July 2015 - July 2016). He used to be a PhD student in program development at the University of Missouri-Columbia, US, and a student majoring in national security and defense strategy at the US National Defense Academy.
Vietnam has sent more than 800 military and public security officers to serve as individuals and groups at three missions and the UN Headquarters.
According to assessments from UN missions and organizations, Vietnamese officers have made significant efforts to complete given tasks at the missions, showing great professionalism and discipline.
Through detailed, practical, and extremely humanistic contributions, Vietnamese soldiers have made a positive impression on mission leaders, international colleagues, and locals.
